Quiet Canal In Amsterdam

Quiet Canal in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

What I love about this image is the peace. It captures that time between day and night when the light is changing, after street lamps have turned on but before dusk has fallen. The time of year is that way, too. It’s no longer autumn but not quite winter yet, either. Leaves have fallen but the trees are not entirely bare. The few clinging leave share the same yellow as the street lamps, but one is slowly fading while the other seems to intensify in contrast to the dwindling light. Everything is just waiting in the between. And it is peaceful.

I can’t remember where I was in Amsterdam when I took this picture. What I do know is that it was taken almost exactly one year ago, because my husband and I celebrated Thanksgiving in Amsterdam last year and it’s that time of the year again. It is wonderful how photos can help to brighten warm yet fading memories.

In honor of last year’s great trip, I have declared this Thanksgiving week to be Amsterdam Week! More of Amsterdam to come…. And if you missed Amsterdam Monday (so named retrospectively), check out yesterday’s post, Amsterdam’s Posing Lady.
