Sherborne Gate Waits

Beech Avenue, Sherborne Estate Gate, Gloucestershire, United KingdomBeech Avenue, National Trust’s Sherborne Estate, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.

Once upon a time, this humble dirt lane served as the entrance to Sherborne Estate. A grand gate stood between those who were welcomed to enter and those who were not. Now, Beech Avenue is but a dirt road that is no longer to be accessed from the A40. Instead, traffic speeds past on its way between Oxford and Cheltenham or points in between.

Although no longer in use, the gate structures at the end of the lane still stand as a reminder of more opulent times. Waiting, waiting, just in case….
