I am an American expat, living in the United Kingdom (in the Cotswolds in England, to be more precise) with my husband and two Persian cats. My intent for this blog was to share my experiences of living in the UK and traveling within the UK and abroad. However, this blog has evolved to be much more than that.
As I’ve traveled, my love of photography was reignited. What began as an attempt to chronicle my travels has grown into a daily endeavor. Although I’ve been taking photographs since I was sixteen, I have no formal training in photography. Even so, I think I do a half decent job of it. I take photographs for the love of it, and I like to think it shows. This blog has expanded from its original purpose to include the sharing of some of my better photographs, both past and present.
I hope you enjoy taking all or part of this journey with me.
Oh! And in case you were wondering why the blog is named “Sat Nav and Cider”: Sat Nav (a.k.a. GPS in the US) represents exploration and travel. Cider (a.k.a. hard cider in the US), if done right, is a delicious alcoholic beverage made from apples (but sometimes from pears) widely available in pubs (and grocery stores!) throughout the UK. Enjoying a cider in a pub or among friends associates cider, in my mind, to the entire social experience, including food, drink, and culture.
And one final introduction. I forgot to mention the hubster’s and my constant travel companion, “Abby” the sat nav.
Yes, we named her. She is teaching me how to speak with a British accent, after all. “Tun left. Muj right. Take the motaway. You have reached yau destination.” I’m working on it.

That’s a weird SatNav that you have – I don’t understand any of that and not sure that you can have a British accent – there are too many of them but I guess that it is the same in the USA?
I always smile when hear the phrase “British accent” from Americans. How many years old is English and how many American? So who says with accent?! 🙂
Interesting comments. I’m not a linguist but, if I’m not mistaken, American English and British English share the same lineage. After all, America was colonized by the British so the first Americans were English-speaking Brits. Since the split, our dialects have just evolved differently, as have our accents. America includes the distinct accents of the Northeast, South, Midwest, West Coast, etc, with some northeastern accents sounding closer to a British accent than to other regional accents in the US. Comparatively, English in the UK includes distinct English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish accents. Although the various British accents are distinct, Americans may have difficulty distinguishing them, so I would classify all the regional accents as either American or British. Technically, there may not be a “British accent,” but in the US, people from the UK have got one. Perhaps while I’m in the UK I should distinguish between the accents and say that Abby has an English accent?
May be we should say people from UK speak English, people from USA speak English with American accent? I am not linguist too 🙂

Morning! I’ve been looking at some of your past posts and noticed….you haven’t posted in a great while. I hear your voice about the darkness of the North and am hoping you have weathered your mind and spirit through it all. Having lived in the UK and now living in Portland OR area…our weather is so similar. Bucking one’s self up for the many months of winter can be…daunting. There is no need to respond/reply. Just hoping the best for you, hubs and soul-saving cats. Happy Christmas.
